Musica Viva NY and the Allen-Stevenson Children’s Chorus perform Carl Orff’s most iconic work, Carmina Burana, kicking off our first choral concert of the 2022-23 season with energy and excitement. Finished in 1936, and based on 11th and 12th century poetry, Carmina Burana evokes timeless states of the human condition from happiness all the way to despair. George Crumb’s music in his monumental River of Life (2008) explores those same emotions, using American hymns, spirituals and revival tunes. Even though Orff’s and Crumb’s works are stylistically different, they are both rhythmically haunted, intense and mythical. We hope that the pairing of these two works will cast new light on each of them, creating a magical experience.
